You should be eating consistently throughout the day, regardless of when you exercise. However, it is advisable not to workout immediately after your last meal for the reason that food creates gastric activity in your stomach, and high-impact movements can aggravate that process. The general guideline is to eat a meal no larger than 350 calories before exercise, and wait at least one full hour after the end of the meal to workout. Working out on an empty stomach can spell more trouble than working out on a full one. For one thing, your muscles use glycogen (blood sugar) as a primary energy source, and if you are running low on it, you can faint or pass out.

As far as I know, it's totally okay to eat before you exercise. I don't imagine it'd be any fun to pass out at the gym in the middle of a cardio session! But if you eat too much or eat right before exercising, you might get an uncomfortable cramp. I usually eat a small, protein & carb combination about 15 minutes before cardio and I'm super healthy and look fit and thin, so I know this works for me. And I don't think lying down after you eat is bad. That wouldn't make any sense for it to be bad. =)

I work out first thing in the morning before eating, and wait one hour after working out to eat (I drink water, though!). As long as your blood sugar is under control, this should be fine, and will allow fat to be used for fuel quicker. If you eat shortly before working out, that energy will be used first to fuel the workout. If your goal is to build muscle more than lose fat, then eating something (like a power bar) is fine. Also, the waiting one hour after the workout to eat allows your metabolism to burn even more calories before dipping into the calories from the food you eat.

If it has been more than two hours since you have had any food, I would recommend a small snack before you exercise to give your muscles the glucose it needs to fuel your activity. This snack should contain about 15 to 20 grams of carbohydrates and 5 to 10 grams of protein. I would limit the calories to no more than 200. Eating more than this before exercise will lead to a delay in gastric emptying during your activity, and could result in stomach cramping. What I recommended above will give you a slow rise in your blood sugar - which will result in a stronger work out.

I steadily gained weight after my two babies, and at the age of 48 found that it didn’t just “come off” anymore. All of these fact/vs/myths are very interesting, and it is good to know that if you eat a bite after 8:00 p.m. you won’t have fat cells celebrating all night. I have learned from lonestartnow that all calories are not the same; that you have to take responsibility and control of your own life, and eat better, move more. It is really common sense, and all of us know it, but we like to put it off till tomorrow. I lost my 60 pounds two years ago and feel like my life has been given back to me. What REALLY feels good is that I gave my life back to me. I hope anyone that needs to get healthy; whether it is to lose weight or just make better choices, will decide to do it now, not put it off. Happy Fall All!

I think Dr. Bauer's philosophy is full of crap. I thinks that genetics has almost everything to do with health. If not, how do you explain things such as people smoking 30 and 40 years and never getting cancer, heart disease, or respitory problems yet some younger smokers contract these diseases at an early age? How do you explain people living into their 80's who have been over weight all their lives and yet many thin people die at 40 of heart attacks. How do you explain people such as Tampa Bay Buckneer's linebacker, Barrett Ruud's mother, who dedicated her whole life and career to proper nutrition, as she was a professional nutritionist who they say looked 10 years younger than she was, yet she dies of a massive heart attack at the age of 50? I'll tell you why, It's all genetics!! Nutrition has little to do with it!! Yeah, I think that people who abuse themselves with drugs or alcohol, (however there many alcoholics that live to be ripe old ages), shorten their lives but I still believe genetics have 99% to do with it. Prove me wrong!!

Myths even to the supposive "experts" are not truly understood. Ms. Joy Bauer seems to believe plenty of myths as truths. One for instance is that she believes that a calories restrictive diet is the way to have long term success in weight loss. Ask anyone on here about their friend, family member, etc. that has been on a calorie restrictive diet such as Weight Watchers. All of the people will say that the person that they knew eventually gained back the weight. Was the goal to lose the weight and then gain it all back and then some? So, do calorie restrictive diets work? NO! She further talks about metabolism in another artice on here. Yes, it is the rate at which your body burns through food. However, how are you going to speed your metabolism rate? You can change it as you aren't a victim of a gentic metbolism. Simply by having a concern for muscle, moderate aerobic exercise (Not excessive), and supportive eating that allows you to maintain muscles and level hormone production. Supportive eating doesn't mean eat less. In fact, it means to eat more in order to keep your body producing heat at high levels! You should try to eat a highly thermic meal every three to three and a half hours to prevent your body from feeding off of muscle tissue. A highly thermic meal includes a lean protein, a fiberous carb, and a starchy carb. Even the good doctor can agree that 1200 calories of ice cream per day for a year will not give you the same body that 1200 calories of supportive eating will give you! My clients eat around 3000-4000 calories a day and they still lose fat! How can this be? I know the answer, but does the good doctor? Why won't Yahoo and other big companies turn the health and fitness thing over to fitness professionals? They are the only people who are actually giving people the information people need to transform their bodies. I know why, but people will not believe me. It begins with a $$$ and ends with a $$$. They want people to fail so they can continue selling you things and products you don't need! I will stop ranting and offer people my free get your tummy flat report if you ask for it at memphistrainer12@yahoo.com.
