I think that you missed a very important cause of sleep deprivation, that is: sleep apnea. Very few people know they have it or the reason for the poor sleep until sometimes it is very late and already have heart and lung problems. I coughed for months and was exhausted by it - and complained to my doctor for years that I had a very high resting pulse rate - but was not diagnosed until I checked my O2 saturation and found it to be 78% - I then ended up with an enlarged heart, 3 months of O2 therapy and the continued health problems with the above and hav3e just been started on meds for type 11 diabetes. I now struggle every day to get fitter, I can swim and do aquasize but stationery bikes and stair climbing leave me exhausted quite quickly.

I am a sleep technologist and see patients every day with numerous health problems, including the ones mentioned in your article. Sleep apnea and other sleep disorders can widely effect peoples overall health. If a person snores loudly, wakes in the night with the feeling of choking, or wakes up even after twelve hours of sleep feeling exhausted or have headaches, these could be signs. Truth is Sleep Apnea is quite common and treatable, but alot of people still are in the dark about it. If left untreated it can lead to heart attacks and stroke. Sleep is more than just getting "some sleep". It is the body's way of regenerating. Good luck:)

Sounds nasty to get diabetes just b'cos I deprived myself of my beauty sleep! The above mentioned advices are something which I try to adhere to.Unfortunately, my profession is such that I need to work in shifts. Not that, I don't enjoy my work but I won't be able to get to sleep after doing an afternoon shift followed by a morning shift, the next day!The next morning, about 12pm in the afternoon while I'm at work, I 'll get really drowsy! Well, that being said, I should take a look at bedtime snacks that really help! God bless!
