Are Fat-Free Sprays Really Fat-Free? Posted Fri, Jan 18, 2008, 12:19 pm PST

Are fat-free cooking sprays and butter sprays really fat-free? This answer is not so straightforward.

Non-stick cooking sprays and butter sprays are made of vegetable oils, so they certainly contain fat. However, thanks to their spray technology, one serving produces a portion so small that the fat content is insignificant.

And according to nutrition labeling laws, a product can be labeled as fat free when one serving contains less than 0.5 grams of fat.

That said, fat-free sprays and butters can be a useful tool when you're watching your weight; however, take it easy on the trigger, or you'll get many more calories (and fat) than you bargained for.

In fact, one client made the mistake of thinking fat-free meant carte blanche, and used an entire bottle of ‘I Can't Believe It's Not Butter' spray on her diet-friendly veggies and baked potato. That's more than 800 calories of pure fat!
