I use a mantra: "fruit, vegetables, & protein". I don't buy anything else, with few exceptions. Carbohydrate is overrated. I buy a little bread, but no other processed foods.

Here's another suggestion, stay away from the coupons. Many food coupons are for things that are not very good for you. Check the sodium content or the sugar content on those so-called "good deals". You're better off spending your money on fruit and veggies, what your body is really craving, than the 100-calorie pack snacks.

Young kids can be a distraction - but I taught my son to read ingredient labels, and he can help find good food on his own. When he picks up some processed stuff with a catchy name or label, I tell him to read the ingredients. After stumbling over the first few unpronounceable additives he'll realize his mistake and put it back on the shelf. Best of all - avoid most processed and packaged foods - buy organic food staples and hormone/antibiotic free meats. Teach your kids to help in the kitchen and cooking will become less of a chore and more of a fun family activity.

Always try to have a little snack before heading to the grocery store. Otherwise, you will convert into a impulse consumer and cost you at the register.
