This is easy to comment on, keep the kids off video games an internet, and have them go out with their friends and have a good time, like I did when I was in my teens. We always had fun doing a little bit of everything. Even back then, we never heard of this kind of article before and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would say this.

Hi Joy, I am a single mom raising a soon to be teenager with bad eating habits. She doesn't exercise except during baskball season. She plays with the Jr. High Team. She is a 12 yr old girl who weighs over 300 pounds. Now she is 6'1 inches tall. But I talk with her a lot about all the health problems with being over weight. She tells me that all I do is down her and I am not so small myself. She is right about one thing, I am not a small woman. I weigh 205 pounds and is only 5'6. I work two jobs, I teach school and have a day care center. I am constantly moving on both jobs. I still should make time for exercise but I am happy to sit for a few minutes each day. My daughter on the other hands does nothing but stay at home watch t.v. and eat junk. She loves vegetables and fruits, but she choose to eat junk. I am so stressed from my jobs until I've started to keep my mouth close to have peace. I don't want to see my child with a lot of health issues in the future. But me telling her is not working, she need a reality check. She believes that playing basketball during the season is all the excercise she needs. Could anyone please lead me to a solution. I love my child and I want her to have a healty life. She will kill herself at this rate and I can't imagine life without her. Working mom

Dear Working Mom, First of all everything I will write to you is 100% from experience. On August 2 2007 it will be two years since I have been dieting and exercising. I have lost 160lbs!! I weighted 340 two years ago. Your daughter does need help to stop her destructive eating behaviors. It makes me very sad to think of a 12 year old girl at 300lbs. If you would like to write back to my e-mail and talk about this and pick my brain I would be happy to do that. I am not a religious person (spirtual) but I made a promise a long time ago that if God would help me lose weight I would do whatever I had to do to keep it off and I would try to help, motivate or incourage anyone who wanted it. Food is filling a space for her and the bigger she gets the more that space will need to be filled. For a relaity check have her watch the tv show Big Medicine, it will make a huge impression on her I promise!!!! TLC/The Learning Channel has a lot of weight related shows maybe look on there website and get the program schedule. Best to you and your daughter. There is help for her, but she has to want it. Sincerely, Shelly gratefullbubbles@yahoo.com

I have gone through the statergies mentioned above but do you think these statergies helps immediately. I think that the world is mooving too fast and every body wants the results within a very short span of time and these statergies are good but the process is too long if seen practically. Should there not be a control at the very intial stages. I also want to ask a question how can we judge obesity at initial stages?

Japanese green tea is preferable to any kind of diet drinks or special teas that might be sold as a dieting strategy. Japanese green tea has no calories and is drunk without sugar. In fact if green tea is drunk after a meal its tannin content improves the function of fat-degrading enzymes. Tea can also alleviate hunger while providing vitamins and minerals that diet drinks cannot. I found the best Japanese green tea at www.sakurateahouse.com

In Florida, a group of parents have noticed what is happening in Virgina schools and have pulled together to talk about how to get Dance Dance Revolution (or something like it) into every classroom in America. The concept is to use independent dance-exercies as 'exerlearning' where 10 minutes of dance-exercise becomes a REWARD for math or reading tasks completed. Kids love this game and thousands of kids have achieved optimum health by dancing their way to the highest levels. They like it because this dance game is as addicting as any other Play Station game where the player moves up once they've mastered certain levels. We need to remember that kids don't necessarily see "future health" as a reward-- its not tangible. Kids want to be rewarded today. That's why we also need to REWARD kids for making better food choices in the community. Teachers--One way is to have kids bring in receipts from the healthy restaurants they've patronized with their parents. Certain healthier menu items receive more POINTS than others. Then kids can turn the points in for fitness related prizes (baseballs, soccer balls, uniforms, frisbees, T-Shirts, bikes?) Local business sponsors can donate the prizes. We've got to quit chit chatting and start putting programs together at home, school, church, anywhere kids gather. Just do it :- for them and for yourself too!
