wow, is there anything left to eat? Honestly, the aspartame is the biggie for me. Even a stick of gum or a mint with it can cause a migraine for me.

I'm so happy to see this article posted. I am hoping it will help many people. I suffer with true migraines, and I was in bed 5 out of 7 days every week. But there is hope! A wonderful doctor who is brilliant in the Greensburg area recommnded the tyramine diet for me. I needed to combine the diet with a preventative medicatin called Topomax also. Together the two made a huge difference for me. Within 4 weeks, I got my life back! I am truly blessed by God. I write to encourage others - don't give up. Now, my migraines are down to just one or two a month, sometimes less. The diet posted here is not as extensive as the one I follow. My doctor gave me a copy of the diet from the Diamond Headache Clinic. One important thing missing was YEAST EXTRACT - which is in so many of our processed foods! It gives me a migraine every time. Also, ALL ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS, even the newest ones, like SPLENDA, give me migraines. As a general rule of thumb, all natural foods - fresh foods, like fruits, vegetables, meats - anything you make yourself, are generally okay. You have to stay away from meats/cheeses that are smoked or aged. I avoid most frozen foods, canned foods, boxed foods - anything "prefab". It is extra work - but believe me, if you truly have migraines, and you discover a diet/medication that works, you don't mind following it at all! I don't mind giving up foods that I used to eat either - it's worth it when I don't have a migraine every day - I don't like eating them that much. And my final comment - there is, at least in my mind, a difference between a headache and a migraine. I get both. Those of us who have truly had a migraine will completely understand my comment here. If you suffer from migraines, ask your doctor about Topomax, and give this diet a try. It changed my life. I'm living again. And check with the Diamond Headache Clinic - their list is more complete, even with suggestions for substitutions for foods you should avoid. Remember, there is hope! Don't give up!

I rarely get migranes (maybe 3-4 a year), but I do eat A LOT of the foods listed in the article. I've noticed lack of sleep over a day or two adds greatly to the formation of migranes for me. But I am unsure of what foods actually contribute to it... When I actually get them, I drink A LOT of water, take some Exedrin migrane medication. I also notice the next day that I feel like I have an hangover the next day (as I refer to it)... a mild headache.. Why is that?

61 - Have you asked your doctor about Maxalt? I've taken it for years and it hasn't lost it's effectiveness. It comes in two forms - pill form and dissolvable tablets that you put under your tongue. The dissovable form seems to work best for me. It's extremely important to always carry it with you, because it only seems to work if you take it AS SOON AS you realize you're coming down with a migraine. (Usually I start getting sensitive to light and to loud noises before I start feeling physical pain, which is nice, because I can take a maxalt and rest a bit, and the pain will never come!!) I've also talked with a couple other Maxalt users over the years who say that as long as they take it within the first 30-45 minutes of their migraine, as well as lay down in a dark room for at least an hour, they easily recover from their migraine. And that's a lot better than suffering for three days or longer! Anyway, whoever invented Maxalt is my hero, and you should definitely ask your doctor about it if you haven't already tried it!

I laughed when I read this. It may be true, but it would be difficult for anyone to avoid everything on this list. The big message was, "Don't eat food!"

I'm not sure I agree with "foods that trigger migraines". I've had migraines for 25 years, and have kept tabs on what I could be doing to possibly bring these on myself. Never, in all these years, have I been able to see a direct link between my pain and the foods I eat. Rather, what I can say is that dehydration, stress and muscle tension, as well as menstruation are THE biggest factors in my horrible headaches. If other sufferers can succesfully mitigate recurring pain by staying away from certain types of food, that's great. But I would suggest looking at your overall lifestyle and not be too quick to rule food as the only factor.

I have always found that a good strong black cup of coffee at the onset of my migraines would always knock it right out...But as I'm getting older it seems that the coffee remedy is taking longer to kick in...I wonder as you get older does the migraines get more resistant to the over the counter and natural remedies that usually work to get rid of them...If anyone has any insight on this PLEASE let me know or any other remedies that might help me...I'm suffering from one at this very moment and I'm really close to going to the hospital for it...HELP ME PLEASE!!!

I have had migraines for 20 years. And yes there are many food triggers. The idea you need to take from this is not that everything is a trigger just that you may not realize that what you are eating is causing these migraines. And picking up the bible is not going to stop your migraines!!!
