Welcome Joy, I am going to think positive, that you are more honest and real than most nutrionists, who tell us there are no BAD foods.

Shutterbug, forget wanting good nutrition to taste the same as heart attack food! Acquire a taste for Health. And now that we are on to nutrition, I'm going to bite your FA for putting a pound of bacon in those beans. Saute up some onions, in some toasted semame oil, put that in your beans, and find out what good food feels like in your mouth. Golly, man no more heart attacks! When your taste buds are covered with saturated fat, many of the wonderful complexities of flavor are lost. Kick the pig out of your kitchen and live. With all sincerity, we need a good man like you to stay alive, no clogged arteries, upstairs or down!

do fix those beans many ways, however that one goes back to my boyhood days, seldom fix them like that however was just in that mood and had been a long while since having that style. right now can think of about 10 ways I like to fix them. that is the only one with bacon, just relax a bit I do know my limits, even though I sometimes over step them.

I'm glad to hear that shutterbug. Its a shame when people think the only way to season food is with pork. I grew up with that style of southern cooking and I can tell you, it was tragic what it did to my family. I sure can see a major improvement in the health and beauty of my relatives who decided to kick the PIG out of their cooking! Honestly tho, if you have never tried toasted sesame oil in your cooking, you will find its a rich flavorful taste that will make you never miss pork as a seasoning. Careful, a little goes a long way. When I was a vegetarian , I had a roommate who would cook with it, and the smell of it made me swear he was trying to sneak some bacon into the stir-fry! I'm very passonate about food, but I never sacrifice health for flavor! Speaking of coleslaw the Mennonites around here make a broccolli-cauliflower cole-slaw, that makes connosuiers of coleslaw drool, and it makes people who don't care for coleslaw ask for seconds.

Speaking of beans, the usda released a list of the foods with the most antioxidants, small red beans topped the list. I had never eaten them, but I went to the grocery and sure enough there they were, called small red beans. They have been our new favorate for the last year. I won a ribbon at the fair last year for the best makeover receipe.

normally when I fix beans, use either canola oil or flax seed oil. then add imitation bacon bits just for the flavor, not quite the same but simular. I have the job of making the cole slaw for july the 4th, so want to keep the taste close to what all are used to.

white oak, you just spoiled a good fantasy, after all what better way to kill some time while the food is cooking, than to do a little cooking not connected to food.
