Finding 'Me' Time as a Mom Posted Thu, May 10, 2007, 4:51 pm PDT

Being a mother requires wearing many hats. From managing the house, the meals, bath time, naptime, the bills, to balancing work and relationships, many times I find very few moments to even sit down.

Life with kids gets crazy, and there are times I feel I just cant manage anymore. But, then the reality sinks in – as a mom I can't even let the craziness get to me.

How do we, as mothers, find peace in the chaos of our daily lives? Is it even possible?

For me, finding some 'me' time every day has been life transforming. These moments, if tapped into regularly, build up over time to give the busy mom a source of peace, perspective and calmness.

The key to my personal sanity has been to find some time every day – even if it is only for 15 minutes of such me time. This is a time when ideally I can meditate for 15 minutes to catch my breath and be silent.

Meditation can take the form of closing your eyes and being aware of your breath, doing yoga, or of just sitting with your eyes closed. Most often your mind will be racing with all the things you haven’t done, forgot to do, or need to do, but the main point is that you are giving yourself a moment to decompress.

If I can’t find even 15 minutes of quiet time, I make an effort to eat one meal consciously (rather than multitasking while eating) or even sitting down quietly to have a cup of tea while the kids play. These few moments of reconnecting with the real me has a dramatic effect not only on my energy level, but also on my mental and emotional state.

By committing to the me time daily, I also feel that I have a reserve of energy on those days when I just can’t find even those few precious moments for myself.
