So true, these problems start in childhood yet when asking any physicians about High-Cholestrol in children they say "don't worry about it." Currently the system doesn't make sense. If there is a predisposition then action should be taken when they are young as opposed to waiting until they develop high-cholestreol. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Lots of people are referencing the "Fat Kid" but its not always about weight. You can be 100 pounds and 5'5" and have dangerously high cholesterol. I know this because thats my situation...Its genetics for me though. Medications should only be used as a last resort, or for conditions that are extreme, such as genetic conditions where diet alone is just not enough. Don't be so quick to blame it all on appearances, thats just ignorant!

When I was 18, I had a cholesterol count of 200 for the LDLs and 22 for the HDLs....really bad. I was 5'6 and 120 pounds. So it is not always about weight or lifestyle. It is good to get it checked as soon as possible, so something can be done about it.

This is insane. Putting children on these kinds of drugs and the side effects they have should be crime. Do you really want to lower their cholesterol? Stop eating animal products. Do you know only animal products have cholesterol. No vegetable sources have cholesterol so they cannot increase cholesterol. Once you stop feeding the body this excess cholesterol it stabilizes itself and your body will only make as much cholesterol as it neeeds. Exercise also helps decrease cholesterol naturally. Do your research and find out the truth before you put your kid on these statin drugs.

Unfortunately this article does not mention the most important factor in reducing LDL (and increasing HDL) - EXCERCISE! Before any responsible parent listens to a doctor's recommendation to put their child on drug, they should make sure their children get at least 30 minutes of excercise each day.

my daughter is 5 years old, is very slim and loves, loves, loves fruits and veggies. She is a big whole milk drinker. Her cholesterol just came back 210. I am curbing the desserts and switched to 1% milk. You don't have to be fat to have high cholesterol.
