I quit smoking in 1978 at the age of 38. I was a heavy smoker 2-4 packs a day, pipe, and occasional cigar. I had no preset goal in mind when I quit. After dinner on night I fixed a "Stinger" (brandy and creme de menthe) sat down in my recliner and reached for a smoke. Rather than take one, I pushed them away and said to myself, "I won't have one now, I'll have it later." I carried them with me for three weeks and, "later" never came. I just decided who was in charge of my life. Me or cigarettes! It can be done!

I smoked for 28 years - started at the age of 15. It has been almost 3 years since I quit, and it was very hard to do. My smoking friend had a quadruple heart by-pass surgery which gave me the incentive to quit. I will admit I still miss it, but I will NEVER pick up another cigarette. I want to see my grandchildren grow up to have kids, and this will help ensure I may be around to do so. It is hard to quit, but worth the effort. By the way, I used the nicotine patch to quit. I really don't think I could have done it without them.

I recently quit smoking with the help of Chantix. I had tried to quit 3 times before but it was actually EASY to stop w/ this Rx from my Doctor. I highly reccommend it.

This is my 5th day without a cigarette. This is also my 8th time quitting smoking. I quit cold turkey the other 7 times. This time I used the patch for 2 days and decided I wanted to live and cigarettes were not my boss. It was hard to quit this last time. Hard to stop smoking all together. I now know my trigger is STRESS. Maybe I can recognize it the next time and not pick up that cig again.

Your best bet is to get individual counseling from a professional combined with a prescription medication (such as Zyban). Most of the suggestions offered here are really not very helpful.

I've been smoke-free for 6 weeks now after smoking approx. 2 packs a day. I smoked for 42 years, not always that much, but atleast a pack a day. I just decided one evening that I wasn't going to buy anymore. The next day I got up, smoked the last 3 cigarettes I had, threw away all the ashtrays and that was it. I had tried to quit by slowing down many times, but that didn't work. I know it's just something that you have to make up your mind that your are ready to do, something you WANT to do, and decide this is it, and do it. I have been doing remarkably well and even when there was a very stressful event recently, I didn't turn to them, so I am pretty proud of myself.
