To answer the question to the first response. Ideally your ldl should not be more than 4 times you hdl. Dave http://health-pictures.com/

my cholestrol is 249 but my HDL is 81. I eat healthy and exercise. Oatmeal everyday for breakfast and 23 almonds, all low fat items and other healthy foods through out the day. However, my LDl is often high. Any suggestions?

Hi: I'm a cardiologist with an interest in prevention. Having a cholesterol of 249mg/dl doesn't mean you're sure to get heart disease. One thing you can do to reduce your chances is to follow the Mediterranean Diet (and it sounds like you do). The Mediterranean Diet has been shown to prevent heart disease in 75% of the people who follow it. Many people don't have an exceedingly low cholesterol but still don't get heart disease. As cardiologists we don't really know why one person has a somewhat higher cholesterol and doesn't get heart disease. We do know that inflammation of the heart arteries is important and saturated fat has been shown to help cause inflammation of the arteries. If you eat walnuts, fish, avoid red meat and follow the other components of the mediterranean Diet your chances of getting heart disease is low. Interstingly, our emotional health is also important. Numerous research studies have shown that negative emotions: fear, anger, sadness, etc. can cause heart disease. So having a cholesterol of 249 mg/dl while it isn't ideal doesn't necessarily mean you'll die from heart disease. Dr. Kirk Laman www.blog.drkirklaman.com

Good article. My cholesterol was 121 for years. Now up to 137 at age 70. I eat no sugar, no junk food, no cokes or fried foods, and drink 2 or 3 glasses of wine daily. I heard that people with low cholesterol were in danger of getting cancer. Is that true?

People with low cholesterol include people who don't eat a lot because they are sick with diseases that include cancer, hence the low cholesterol levels. If this is taken into account there is no relationship between low cholesterol levels and the incidence of cancer. See www.myfatdog.com for more information about this.

Many studies conducted by independent researchers indicate only a scant connection between heart disease and LDL in wide populations. To say that LDL and saturated fat are the primary cause of heart disease is false.See studies conducted by Uffe Ravsnikov MD pHD.Why is it that one half of all organic related heart attcks occur in people with normal cholesterol levels? Why are there vitually over mortality changes from people who have been on statin drugs to control cholesterol? This is the greatest medical con of modern times.

Diet, Diet, Diet, is always better for a person nutitionally, if at all possible, to lower their cholesterol. Its not that difficult to lower a person's cholesterol. First of all, change margarine and butter to EVOO, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, to help lower your cholesterol and to increase the good cholesterol. You can deep fry, saute, grill, and bake with EVOO. Secondly, limit your meat intake to 2-3 times a week, to 2-3 onces per serving. Eat more fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and whole grains than dairy and meat products. The key word here is FRESH:) Stay away from whole milk if your adult and use skim milk, and don't do meats that are processed:) This means, meats that have been smoked, added to and pumped up like whole ham, sandwich meats, and frozen meals. If you eat out...stick to vegetable salads. Its that easy. Use EVOO instead of butter or magarine and eat fresh foods:) Raw, fresh, vegetables and fruits have more nutritional value than canned. Whole grain breads, pastas, and crackers have more nutritional values too. When cooking fresh vegetables...steam or roast in oven with a little EVOO and some of your favorite herbs. Serve with some brown rice, not the white stuff, or a whole grain pasta:) It may take a little getting use too but you'll reap the benefits of a healthier body with loads of energy:) Oh yeah, store or deli cookies and baked goods? Their a no no too. Find a recipe of your favorite item and make it yourself. Most recipes will allow you to substitute the oil and/shortening with EVOO. There are a gillion websites for you sweet tooth people, just shop around on the web, for more nutritional sweet recipes. Fruitose, is better for ya than processed sugar too. Fruitose is an all natural sweetener and you only use 1/2 of the amount of it than what you'd use processed sugar. Fruitose can be found in most chain stores in the health sections of the store. One word advice about doctors...try nutrition first, research your medical problem, and seek nutritional guidance. Lots of medical problems, conditions and even acute medical problems can be delt with at home with proper nutrition. God given herbs, are another thing that most doctors will not advise you to use. Again, research before the use of herbs and any alternative medical treatments or cures. I recommend the Rodell's Encyclopedia of Herbs and Healing Foods books. Use your brain and research your medical problem and symptoms. Most people have the ability to research and figure out the problem/condition, just as good as a doctor. Find a doctor who will actually listen to your research and what you've found. It will save a lot of time for you and your doctor, if you know what your condition is. If a doctor won't listen to ya? Find another doctor who will. You hired the doctor and you are responsible for your own healthcare. Take charge and responsibility for your own healthcare instead of relying on doctors to know everything, when they don't. For the most part, its a guessing game for them as to what might be the problem. Help your doctor, to help you, by doing your research. And who knows, you might just learn a thing or two.
