and in the death as the last few corpses lay rotting on the slimy thoroughfare the shutters lifted in inches in temperance building high on poachers hill as red mutant eyes gazed down on hunger city no more big wheels fleas the size of rats sucked on rats the size of cats and ten thousand peoploids split into small tribes coveting the highest of the sterile skycrapers like packs of dogs assaulting the glass fronts of love me avenue ripping and rewrapping mink and shiny silver fox now legwarmers family badge of sapphire and cracked emerald any day now the year of the diamond dog...this ain't rock n' roll! this is genocide!

With all due respect, I disagree. Though weight-loss supplements are generally bunk, the entire supplement industry is but a fraction of what we spend on pharmaceutical drugs. (10 billion vs. 250 billion). While these supplements are often useless, they rarely hurt and kill people - unlike with many drugs the FDA has approved too quickly. Hundreds of thousands of people a year are harmed by pharmaceuticals, but no one seems to think this is any big crisis - and if you talk about corruption at the FDA or unsafe drugs, you get labeled a "wacko". Fact: no multivitamin has ever killed thousands of people. Promising the moon is unethical, but I'd argue that pharmaceutical companies do FAR more damage than a few weight-loss hucksters. It doesn't excuse the hucksters (or people's responsibility to investigate before buying), but let's be hard on everyone equally. Slimfast hasn't had quite the same tragic impact as Vioxx, Prempro and a litany of other recent drugs. Moreover, pharmaceutical ads are JUST as manipulative - visions of puppies in fields, happy sexy people, life on the beach, hugs and smiles, etc etc.

I surely agree. I have wasted much needed cash on several of the over the counter diet aids, that in this magazine and that, were guaranteed, or number one on the market...no more false advertisement...give us healthy tips, and herbs and habits, and nutritional products, not pills that put one in the risk for choking, if you do not swallow it all the way, and drink over eight oz. of water, and more, that is scary. Thanks, Mary Beth
