I nearly 46 yrs old and 9 days from my baby's due date. My husband and I chose to have amniocentesis (for different reasons). Two things were not said to us before the procedure (which may seem obvious to you now, but weren't to us at the time) which I feel should have. 1. Do not drink anything caffeine or sugary. Luckily, our baby did not move much during the procedure but perhaps he might have. 2. Make sure your not sick during that time. I was sick with allergies which made me cough, cough, cough. The amnio, itself, went "picture perfect" as the Doctor said. And as it turns out, the results were positive for a healthy baby. But between those 2 days we had a serious situation. The 2nd day after the procedure (after I had spent 2 nights coughing, coughing, coughing from post nasal drip) I started leaking amniotic fluid. The Doctor feels that the persistent coughing didn't allow the puncture site to heal and probably caused it to tear. He ordered complete bed rest and prepared me for the possible worst. Those were 5 very serious and tense days for me and my husband until the leaking stopped. While it was happening my husband was beside himself with grief. I had to remind him that we had the amnio for very valid reasons and I felt that even if a miscarriage occurred those reasons were still sound and we should never forget that. I also reminded him that we signed a consent form saying that we understand the risks involved. We were saying we understood those risks involved no matter what the outcome. You have to take a stance for what you believe in and stick to your own decision and not blame anyone or anything if things don't turn out the way you want. I believe- to know ahead of time whether my child has a birth defect gives me the best advantage for immediate medical care at the time of his birth. Again, lucky for us, this is a healthy baby.
