Dear Dr. Margolis,
I applaud your making the rational case for decriminalization of illegal drug use. It’s too bad that the rational view is so often drowned out by religious zealots, those without any science education, and by a mass media that, by and large, has reduced legitimate news reporting to tabloid infotainment. When will education in very basic statistics and probability be made mandatory? When will the U.S. adopt a deadline for the adoption of the metric system by the U.S.? I won't hold my breath.
The druggies, the poor, the illiterate, the deranged, the obese, the taggers, etc, will always be with us. As will the fallout in damaged families and an uncivil society. Our goal should be to educate, treat, rehabilitate, and regulate in such a way that they are only a small percentage of the total population. When "recreational" drug use and fat people are of epidemic proportions, then we all must pay attention to, and apply on the front end, the science to bring back some sanity. If we choose not to pay attention then we will surely pay, on the back end, in taxes to treat, incarcerate, inter, etc.
The Portuguese experience is most instructional. But who’s listening? The Portuguese experience – bad news for the prison guard union? A slimmed down America: Bad news for the fast (fat) food joints? McDonalds, Big Ag, etc. can afford an army of the best lobbyists to buy the Congress.
Scientific illiteracy is perhaps the mother of all illiteracies. When the voting population realizes that their taxes go up and their personal fortune goes down as they pay their share to treat all the fallout from these epidemics, then, perhaps, they will get rational and do the right thing. No, I won’t hold my breath.
Sincerely,
Roger Dreyfoos
