Dear Dr. Margolis, WOW I am glad I did not read your article before I flew ~5hrs . I am almost 60, overweight, have major COPD, nasty asthma and have had thrombophlebitis several times in my legs. I had a beautiful flight, not once, but thrice. I met wonderful people and suffered no ill effects. Perhaps that was because I have a deep abiding faith in God and was not scared crapless before I flew. It is great , as a health care provider, to alert patients to real dangers but it is just as harmful to create an atmosphere of doom. I am sure you mean well but please spare us cool cucumbers YOUR fears.

I t has been my experience after many many flights.....thatr the "little air vents" above everyone's head is the nastiest culprit for spreading illness. It ccirculates everyones breath around and blows it right on your face....and YOU INHALE IT..! ! ! I trieed an experiment one time....I opened the air vent and let it "keep me cool". Three to four days later I was sick with the worst bronchitis ever..! ! I had absolutely NO reason to be ill. I had not been around people for 11 days proir to my flight.....I was at my mountain cabin by myself for a little bit of R&R...! ! So ...there ya have it....I proved my theory....at least to my satisfaction...don't blow the air vents on you.....Why do you think so many people get sick when they air travel..? They can give you all kinds of reasosns.....but the little air vents make more sense than anything to me....!!! You are a captive audience in a plane...!!!

This article is totally misleading. The number one danger in air travel is and has always been recirculated air. Breathing others exhalations over and over, This article is planted to assuage fear of the h1n1 virus on planes. Happy Travels!!

Are you kidding me!!!!, whats next!!!!. lets face it, were not ever gonna live in a germ free world, no time soon. maybe you need to tell the people who own these airplane companies, whats going on, and stop the madness there. nothing is gonna change till you experts, like you say you are, can do something about it.

thank you for addressing some of these airline related problems....I am a widow because my 61 year old businessman husband suffered a pulmonary embolism after a 5 hour flight and it was not properly diagnosed at the hospital at the airport where he landed.

yes, there are dangers and just getting out of bed in the morning can have it's dangers, but when in danger, or in doubt, run in circles, scream and shout. or, just have a nice day.

I appreciate your concerns. I flew as cabin crew in the UK for 8 1/2 years prior to my retirement, for the number 1 UK airline. Apart from a few colds & coughs in the first year, I managed to evade any of the problems of which you write about. To travel long distances, what is the alternative?
