My youngest son was to ER so many times for bumping his head when he was very little--he fell a lot trying to keep up with the bigger kids--and when he got older we found out he was basically blind in one eye, throwing off his balance. He never had a concussion or serious side effect. When he was about 9 he got a concussion but not serious effects and again in High School football same. I really never took the warnings seriously because in all our ER trips nothing was ever wrong with him. However 2 1/2 years ago, my father fell and 2 days later died in his sleep the injury, he refused medical treatment at the time or after even though he did complain of a headache. Two days after his funeral, a friends mother fell and he took her to hospital against her wishes because of my dad. Sadly she too died from head injuries from the fall. Amazingly, that same day, my uncle who was on vacation met a man and got talking and found out the man's friend was supposed to be on the trip as well, but had recently fell on the ice and died from the trauma to the head received in the fall!! I guess you just never know.... Obviously, unless you have very good insurance you can not run to hospital for every head bump, but certainly if you develop a worsening headache you should go right away, and with babies who can not tell you their symptoms, always have them checked.
