PTSD is also commonly experienced by survivors of childhood and relationship abuse. Survivors of childhood abuse, sexual abuse in particular, may have strongly "buried" and avoided the recollection of events, and not know why they suffer from a host of problems, including PTSD. PTSD can also occurr decades later, and persist for decades. In that respect, there should be an acknowledgement that PTSD can be of more sudden onset, and recovered from, in more sudden incidents (violence, trauma, etc experienced suddenlt and singly in occurrence), and can have an extended delay in occurring, and be of long-term chronic nature that may never be recovered from (long-term or ongoing trauma such as war, abuse, etc.). I feel that it needs to be recognized in that way so that people can better deal with a condition they may always have, such as epilepsy - there are ways to treat, coping skills can be learned, and so on, BUT one may have to accept and deal with the reality that it may never completely go away, or may recurr.

Post Tramatic Stress can also come from years of mental and physical abuse, not just an incident or being in a war. Believe me years of abuse is like being in your own war zone.
