I'm only a part-time fan of multivitamins. I love the idea behind multivitamins, but then I rarely follow through: I buy them, take them for a few days and then just sort of forget that they're in the cupboard. When I do remember to swallow one, I think of it as a little nutritional cushion, in case I don't manage to eat my recommended daily doses of calcium, vitamin C, iron, zinc and so on. I guess I sort of consider it my last-ditch insurance policy against those crazy (but thankfully uncommon) days when I end up eating potato chips and a Snickers for lunch, instead of turkey on whole wheat or a spinach salad.

I know I'm not doing my body any good by relying on a supplement to fill any nutritional gaps, but I guess I've always thought, somewhere in the back of my mind, that I was getting some other secret, super-health benefits out of it. It turns out, you guys did, too.

According to an exclusive SELF survey, 76 percent of women said they thought their supplements doubled as cancer fighters. But this is not necessarily true, according to the experts. In fact, some supplements are high in soy, which actually promotes the growth of certain types of estrogen-sensitive tumors.

So, consider this just another reminder to try to get all your daily nutrients the natural way: from a balanced diet, rich in fruits, veggies and whole grains. Eating a mostly plant-based diet will send your cancer risk diving. In fact, research shows that countries where people eat from trees (and plants, bushes, etc.) have lower cancer rates than countries like ours, where most people eat from, say, cows and moose. Up your intake of fresh fruits and veggies with these simple, delicious recipes.

Just think, every time you hit the grocery store, it's another chance for you to make choices to live a longer, healthier, happier life. All you have to do is toss a few delicious cancer-fighting foods, including coffee, blueberries and Brazil nuts, into your cart. Get SELF.com's complete shopping list of cancer butt-kickers.
