Most of us blow it out on the Fourth of July with fireworks, booze and red, white and blue cupcakes. With the biggest party of the summer now over, it's a good time to recommit to a fitness strategy.

A Realistic Workout Schedule

Let's face it if you don't get your exercise in by 2 p.m., the window of opportunity begins to close. Not to mention after a long day of work, or work and kids, who has the energy?

How about committing to three days of the week, getting it done in the morning, and one day on the weekend? If you have a commute or something that makes it unrealistic in the morning, do your workout at lunch. Who cares if you get sweaty? Eat a nutritionally-filled smoothie and bust it out for 30 minutes at lunch.

Be Consistent to Reach Your Goals

I believe we can integrate all sorts of change into our lives if we just keep chipping away at the ultimate goal. If you want to start your day an hour earlier, but only wake up earlier by 5 minutes each day, you will still make it to your goal within a few short days or weeks. Baby steps will get you up that mountain as long as you put consistent effort into getting there.

Finding Time to Work Out

Why can't people find enough time to workout? I just don't understand why it's not one of the top five most important things we do in our day/life. Take care of and love our families and friends, go to work or school, enjoy life, help someone out, and take care of our bodies. I'm sure you could switch something around, but you get my point.

After you read this, chart out what you do over the course of five days. Write down how much time is spent on the phone, at the computer for other purposes than work, making sure the house is perfect and so on. Is there a way to find that 30-45 minutes, 4-5 times a week to move your body?

Control Cravings With a Plan

Tufts University did a study and found that 91% of women experience cravings. So you see, you are not alone in your desire for chocolate.

I can sit here and say, "just don't eat it," but at the end of the day maybe it would be better to create some kind of game plan to help deal with the craving. After all, your brain is searching for something to make it feel good, and most likely will continue to push you until you find that release. So here's what I propose:

Make Passion Your Motivation to Change

I raise my hand and admit that I get sucked into how things "look" as a huge part of my motivation. Is my house organized, the car clean, my rearend looking OK, my skin clear, hair shiny, teeth white? Do I look happy? What is everyone thinking about me?

I have to stop and back that bus up. Being concerned with what others think, and how things appear to them, is completely human. However, there comes a time when we have to ask ourselves, "What makes me happy?"

Take It One Day at a Time

Then I started thinking about stretching in parallel to eating well, losing weight, and exercising. People yearn to be healthier, but think maybe they're just going to wake up one day and things will have changed.

The entire process of getting from where we are to our goal can be daunting at times. So, how about we just take it day by day? Cliche, I know, but true nonetheless. If I think about trying to do the splits or get my chest against my knees while stretching from where I am, I'll give up.

Changing a habit or creating a lifestyle change most times doesn't start with a list, a day at the gym or bowl of healthy veggies. The real beginning to the change starts inside your head.
