I was suffering from anxiety, so my Doctor put me on some medication. I gained nearly 70lbs. before I realized it. When I moved to a third floor apartment, I went back to the Doctor concerned I had an illness, because I could not keep my energy going my legs just did not want to walk. Her nice way of telling me I was out of shape helped me to loose nearly 50lbs. over a two year period. I love to get up early in the morning and breath the fresh air. I live in an area that has plenty of hills and a beautiful beach. My anxiety level has dropped and I do not need any medication any longer. If I miss a day I do not get down about it. I make sure I go the next day.

While all this is great advice, many people don't get the results they want from biking around the block with the kids. I don't have a husband or children, so I am able to make my fitness (ALL types of fitness, including strength and flexibility as well as cardio), a priority. I feel for the working mom's out there saying that they really don't have time. It must be difficult. I think that in addition to persons creating their own time, workplaces should be REQUIRED to offer gym memberships, flexible hours, etc., if they are able. Employers should be more understanding and supportive of employees personal fitness goals.

Very true! As well as making time to exercise regularly, I took Gaby's advice & got rid of ALL the pre-processed food and simple carbs in my diet. I'm eating the same number of calories, but I'm deriving those calories from ONLY whole, fresh, "real" food. For almost 2 years I was unable to shed one ounce, even with the regular exercise & watching my calories. But I have lost 10 pounds in less than 2 months, just from modifying my diet to "fresh-food-only." It's funny how I also found time to cook. I'm still losing & I couldn't be happier!

Good points you make about making a list of our inactive lifestyle. I do a lot of inactive things from a chair. More brain activity than physical activity. I've got to balance it out more than what I've been doing in the past few weeks. I've got off track again. This is a good reminder to keep everything in better perspective.

Gabby, I just started reading your blog and really enjoy it! You're honest and straightforward in this article about how "As a culture, we're just too lazy to put forth the effort to create a slot for exercise." Darn that's going to hurt some people right where it counts - because it's honest and true and "I don't have the time" is just an excuse/cover-up because it's too embarrassing to say "I'm too lazy to carve out some time from my tv/computer/video games..."

It clearly is not a matter of lack of time. It is a matter of priorities. When the most precious thing you possess starts going to hell in a handbasket, you will, I promise, begin to make a greater effort to maintain your health and your body. For me, it took cancer. Since then it has taken approximately forty minutes a day of exercise doable anyplace , anytime to achieve something many are amazed at. Although 73(seventy three) I have managed to achieve a body -- at least outwardly -- that looks and behaves thirty years younger than my contemporaries. I try to eat using common sense, although I have a weakness for beer and chocolate. As soon as I become more proficient in writing blogs, I intend to share gratis my techniques and what has worked for me.
