donna7742- a good elliptical machine puts very little stress on your knees and can help you burn cardio calories. But like Gabby says: do weight training so that your muscles become calorie burning machines. You can and should do ab exercises, but strong abs will be hidden under excess weight.

Oprah has a Boot Camp program online that can get you started and gives lots of great tips on workouts & nutrition for FREE (unlike the programs some are constantly trying to advertise here). Oprah's program is great for beginners. There is a ton of information out there, but you need to make the decision that it's worth it to you to go after it.

My mom has lost between 40-50 lbs. working out at Curves. She was over weight and afraid that she wouldn't be able to do the workout. But once she started and realized she CAN do this she has stuck with it. She is 5'7" was at 215 and is now in the 170's. The other plus to Curves is there are no "gym rats" (at least that is what she calls them)stairing at your out of shape body, wondering what you are even doing there, and giving you the evil eye to hurry up and get off the machine. It is ladies only club and the machines are hydrolic so the harder you work them the more resistance you are getting. I am 23 and work out there 3 days a week and the other 2 at the gym where I work. I have always been in shape and played college softball. Curves is nice to cause the weigh and measure you every month. So you may not have lost any weight(Which can be discouraging) but you may have drop several inches and lost body fat as well. Seeing that can be a real modivator that working is is WORKING. The scale may not show it but the tape measure does. in a year I lost almost 7 inches 3.5 lbs and my body fat has drop almost 1.5% down to 21%

Thank you, ladies, for the wonderful advice, and thanks for sharing your own personal inspiring stories. It helps to know that I'm not alone in the quest for taking control over my body (weight), and it's wonderful to know that others have done it and continue to do it! :)

Yoga is great too girls! Ashtanga and hot ( but not Bikram hot) works wonders and All parts of the body. For those who think its like "easy/stretching" grab a mat and go try it! You will spend 1 1/2 hours lifting your Own body weight!I could not lift that much any other time talk about great arms! wow! long lean and strong, all the way to your feet. So those of us who do it , its a real challenge, and there are all sizes and ages in my class, even 6'3", 250 lb. guys who can barely touch their own knees! Don't be afraid, its great and helps at any age! Still 109 @ 36, Yoga rules! (PS: find a good place to do it w/ experinenced teachers!)

Well I have been exercising for the past 5 mths and I must say I have been seeing results. I lost 9 lbs for the first 3 mths then the following mth gained back a couple. I do aerobics exercise every week from Mondays to Thursdays and on weekends do a lot of walking and still the results seem dissapointing. I must say though, that it felt great to lose some pounds. It made me feel better about myself and the way I eat.

Gabby is right...I used to be a sstrict runner...and I was thin but not muscluar. After quitting track I started doing wieght traning six times a week 40 minutues per day and about incorporated with a 20 minutue cardio workout. I lost about 10 pounds and really toned up. My metabolism is extremely fast....I eat about 7 times without putting on wieght. Women will not become masculine looking without the use of supplements. Weight training will only tone and burn fat.

I have found this product to work great before exercising. It gives you a great burst of energy. It's called Goji Juice. Check out this link: http://www.relaxdepot.com/product/Dynamic-Health-Laboratories-Goji-Juice-Lycium-Barbarum.html

I'm now in my 30's, and I'm looking and feeling way better than I did in my 20's. I was 35lbs. overweight, and new nothing about healthy eating and working out. I did the basic cardio & weight lifting thing, and that helped with about 15lbs. of it, but what really finally helped me get the final amount off was yoga, yoga, yoga...there's nothing like lifting and supporting your own body weight...and I'm flexible...that combined with healthy eating and cardiovascular exercise has made me so happy with who I am today...not to mention the new wardrobe I can fit my butt into :)

This article was great- I have been lifting and training for a few years now. Recently, actually about 2-3 months ago my metabolism has stopped. No matter what I do I cant seem to get it back up. Changing my diet changing my workout- nothing works. Do you have any tips. I am young (23) and feel that I shouldnt have this problem. Thank you so much!!
