Growing up in Austin, Texas, I spent lots of time outdoors doing athletic things, which undoubtedly shaped my interest in health and living well. While I’m not the example to follow, I do know the importance of taking care of your body.
I’ve seen the burdens and benefits that our choices create, from the pain brought by cancer upon family members to the physical rewards of pushing your body past where you thought it could go. I’ve written about death as a reporter and witnessed patients’ struggles and successes from inside the walls of a large health care system.
And yes, I’m still inclined to choose a big steak over carrot juice and tofu. I just try to make it certified organic, grass-fed happy beef.
I’ll check in here periodically with news or new approaches from the world of health that might matter to you, so come back when you can.

Health means something different to each of us. For me, it means finding a sense of balance in my crazy life – the surest way to having a healthy mind and body. That often includes some form of tennis, golf, or running and lots of chips and salsa.
I’ve worked in health media for almost 10 years, doing everything from interning at the CDC to writing and producing television. Most recently, I chronicled my struggle to lose 10 pounds and train for a 5K race. (It’s funny how I ran the 2001 Los Angeles marathon but now count every step to finish 3.1 miles.)
Oh I also have asthma, allergies, acne – and that’s just the As. Yes, I’m a hypochondriac (my doctor is on speed dial), but I wear that as a badge of honor.
More importantly, I’m incredibly fascinated by the amazing machines we inhabit, our bodies. No conversation is too personal, no televised surgery too gruesome. Bring it on!
