What a shocking article! Very informative and well presented. We use a natural laundry detergent called Nellie's Laundry Soda which can be found at nellieslaundry.com. They also offer "dryer balls" which are balls you can throw into your dryer that help to soften clothes naturally, get between clothes to help them dry faster, using less energy, and help remove wrinkles. Highly recommended!

After owning and running a drycleaning plant for 14 years, I feel like your suggestions are a bit harsh...Perc has been found to cause cancer in lab rats that were FED the fluid through a syringe up to 10 times a day for months on end. There is no evidence of this being a carcinogen to humans.

what good information. however,no information on do you air out you clothing outside or somewhere in your house, before putting in closet. I know sometime, the outside air has your clothes stinking like a wet dog or something - especially on kids.

Oh! Here comes another "expert" with his scare tactics and obsession with safety. This is crazy, instead of airing out clothes after dry-cleaning, why not re-wash them. That way you would be even safer. Or how about stay home naked, and never venture out of your house. Better yet, get a bubble room, inside a fortified bunker, with clean oxygen pumped in, that way you can never be sick or in danger. Please! Give us a break!

Great natural tips for a healthier lifestyle. In my field of contemporary street fashion design a lot of these kids are not health/environmentally conscious. This is what I want to bring to this industry. Thanks! Visit my site at www.quarterbloom.comThanks! Visit my site at www.quarterbloom.com

The increase in the rate of cancer in the United States is out of control. Why? There are carcinogens in the foods, water, air, products used from antiperspirants to plastic containers), clothes and shoes, etc. It is very sad that in the richest country in the world a disease can be so rampant. "Live simply so others may simply live," respect for life, understanding the truth that every living being is a link in the web of life and destruction of any link affects the whole may slow down this downward spiral. I use rubbing alcohol in a little spray bottle for relatively safely spraying insects clouding in the air or where ever. They drop to the ground quick on a direct hit. I have seen some get out in a hurry when they smell the rubbing alcohol. I use it for hand sanitizer, or skin disinfectant, for antiseptic, for cleaning surfaces, for some spot removing, and dissolving some things on surfaces.

If your research was done correctly it would have found that the number of dry cleaners that use percethylene is down over 50% in the last 10 years and it was not mentioned about the safety of a petroleum based dry cleaning method! If you are going to make customers aware of dangers please make them aware of the precautions that are being made for them also! Dry cleaners - like all business that deal with chemicals - have to follow strict guidelines with the EPA and other organizations!

There are so many "hidden" toxins everywhere. Give it a break! Go live in the Andes if you're worried enough. You'll just have to worry about background radiation and hungry animals then.
