Actually, it's not ridiculous advice - I haven't used a micro in over 12 years. I don't need food in an instance and it kills some of the flavor. I use very few canned goods - usually too much sodium and the flavor of the tin can gets into the food (and canned veggies are mushy and have no vitamins left...) "Normal cleaners" have horrible fumes and so many tell you right on the package that they are toxic. Vineger, simple green, baking soda - those are the cleaners I use. I do have a few non-stick pans, but I prefer glass ones - I think they work better.
