Bubbles are from carbon dioxide carbonic acid, not phosphoric acid. While some soda, cola in particular has phosphoric acid, not all do. Errors such as this hurt Dr. Quackensteins credibility...which is why I read his articles, I usually get a chuckle out of his 'professional advice'.

I used to drink 3-5 cans of diet sodas a day to help me lose weight. I was able to lose weight, however, once I quit sodas altogether and replaced them with water (with some lemon concentrate for flavor), I noticed I was able to lose weight more easily.

Need to give a balance argument here and highlight the lines "overindulging in simple sugar" and "greater chance" when referring to the regular sodas. I agree that diet drinks contain the more riskier sweetners and manafacturers should try and find better alternatives however overindulgence in any of these drinks and lack of exercise and mobility to burn off the sugar I would feel are a greater contributor to obesity, cancers and bone diseses. I would be interested to read comments from other doctors. The "healthy" alternatives are valid though and should be adopted. I do appreciate all your interests in our health and well being and am a regular reader of your blog. Thanks

The study about saccharin causing cancer has been debunked. You really need to check your facts, you aren't using sound research.

I do find it interesting that he doesn't actually cite his studies. I know drinking soda is not good for you, but some of the claims made in this article are dubious. A single study is very rarely taken as fact in the scientific world.

Sacharrin as a carcinogen was based on a limited study where rats were injected with massive doses. The fear tactic proved well to move aspartame into the lead position as the worldwide artificial sweetener. Sacharrin has since been proven (through massive worldwide use and further lab studies) to be safe for human consumption. However the bad rep has never been fixed.

This is the least quackiest of this guy's articles, but that does not change the fact that he is a QUACK.

Comes down to exercising. I agree it's not good to over-indulge in sodas, however, I don't think it should be demonized like many folks do. It isn't anyone's business who drinks what.

This is definitely a very bias study, Colas contain phosphoric acid, not all sodas have this, and researchers say that phosphoric acid replaces calcium probably because people drink it instead of drinking milk. I've actually noticed that when I drink diet sodas, it tends to actually suppress my hunger or make me crave protein because I've had a diet high in protein in the past. I am by no means saying soda is good for you, because it is empty calories, I'm just saying that they seem to be just scaring people.

Obviously people have survived over a 100 years with the evil of soda, its magical how we have come so far with such an evil drink. And as for tap water.... are you serious???? I really doubt the people that lived 1000s of years ago [profane]ed about the contaminants and went to the local swap area for a water filter.
