Once again, Dr. Mao cites no empirical evidence. Typically, the findings of things as you suggest improvement in a local domain, with no generalization to other tasks. Do crossword puzzles a lot, and you'll get better at crossowrd puzzles, but there is NO evidence to suggest it will improve your memory or even global verbal skills involved in writing. Also, apparently Dr. Mao is aware of longitudinal studies using fMRI to investigate neuroplasticity and brain development. I'm not sure that such a technique even makes sense, since even fMRI wouldn't have a neural-connection specific spatial resolution. Increased BOLD levels alone are not an index of increased neural connectivity. But hey, buy his book, I'm sure there's lots of MD-based, ascientific information ignoring the entire field of cognitive psychology. If you're into that kind of thing, it will be a feast of misinformation.

Also, yes, readers are correct: "The human brain starts declining after the age of 30 especially in women with each successive pregnancy." Is a highly questionable statement at best, and utter bogus at worst. Substantiation would have been good there. Neural decline does not imply the same rate of cognitive decline. But when you only study the "medical" side of the brain, you wouldn't be aware of such a concept.

Ah, his PhD is in Nutrition. So clearly, he has the training and experience to make claims regarding cognitive neuroscience. I see. Look Doc, I won't write columns about antioxidants in grapes - please don't write articles about neuroscience.
