You speak of apples, pears etc. as cheap........Don't know where you get yours but at the grocery stores in my area they are both $1.99 a pound. thats almost a $l.00 apiece. I don't call that cheap!

I'm going to try to grow my own food. First, i'm going to try eggs, then cheese, then bread and finally cashews. I just am not 100% sure of how to get started. In the meantime, I'll live on Snickers.

These are pretty good tips. It seems like some of the other stuff you buy are very expensive. I don't eat out as much because I prefer to homecook my meals if I can. It's cheaper too!!! Great article!!

Good advice! I also like to buy chicken thighs in bulk and put them in the freezer in ziplocs. They're really cheap and make delicious soup stock with lots of veggie scraps. As for gardening, I have a window garden of herbs and tomatoes and zucchini in the summer. I also only buy produce which is in season besides bananas, carrots. Frozen veggies are very healthy and cheap as well.

Points taken, but please drop the "Dr. Mao" moniker. That's a ridiculous sounding name, and insults your reader's intelligence. Let's be real, not commercial, If Mao is your name, then use your whole name, not just "Mao." Don't listen to your publicist or yahoo "advisor," just be you . . . Sincerely, and with no malice or sarcasm, David

Thank you doctor for telling me that there are clouds in the sky when it is raining. Labeling you as brilliant would be an understatement for the ages. Just because you use a positive tone in your article does not mean that you are communicating anything useful. Most people will not have reason to disagree with what you say because what you say is trivial. Have you ever considered finding a hobby or YoGa? You ARE contagious.

I usually buy a bag of apples and oranges - an assortment of granny smiths, delicious and valencias - The price of this assortment has gone up from $4.79 per bag to $9.79 per bag in less than 3 weeks. So where do you get the idea that fruit is not expensive?

I'm considering growing my own vegetables and doing some canning. Your article has inspired me. Thank you. Rekaya Gibson, Author The Food Temptress

Fruit is not expensive - Ground beef - $5/lb VS Apple - $.99/lb A good sized apple and a bowl of oatmeal is a great cheap breakfast compared to processed cereal, breakfast meats or yoghurt cups. If we're going by pound, then prepared foods, meats, cereals, frozen foods, and prepared canned goods are freakishly expensive compared to fruit. Honestly, how can someone spend $5 on a box of Fruit Loops, and then complain about apples being $.99/lb?

Dr. Mao doesn't know what he is talking about. Soy is NOT nutritious for people or animals. It is an antinutrient that needs to be fermented in traditional ways, natto, tempe, to be nutritious. And even then it should be eaten in small amounts. The traditional asian diets were high in animal fats. Don't be misled. Tofu is one of the most highly processed foods in the history of mankind and it is not nutritious. It will cause bone loss and many other nutritional shortfalls. Go to westonaprice.org and learn about true traditional eating and politically incorrect diets that are actually good for you.
