Ann J asked why exercise is helpful against diabetes. There are several reasons, some simple other more indepth. The simple answer is increased exercise burns more sugar, decreasing the overall supply in the blood (short-term) and helping the body decrease weight. Weight reduction has a significant effect on diabetes. Another effect of exercise is that exercise can decrease insulin resitance. MOST (approximately 90%) who are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes have insulin resistance. If you want more information about insulin resistance go to www.healthydiabetic.com for a longer explanation. In short, insulin resistances occurs when your cells are overwhelmed with too much sugar and fats. The cell no longer recognizes insulin properly and the body produces more insulin to overcompensate. A program of regular exercise can decrease insulin resistance (A GOOD THING). Recent research indicates that aerobic (running, walking, etc) and light weight lifting are both beneficial (both together are best) at decreasing insulin resistance. I hope this is helpful.
