I have read where people have lost weight and started taking control of their health and no longer have diabetes, can that be true. I read in this article that once you have diabetes you always have it.

Many people do not go for medical checkup unless they are seriously sick. By reading this blog, i will make it a point to go for checkup regularly.

I just found this site. I am very interested in continuing to follow up on this subject. I just had my pre-diabetes class on Monday, November 5th. It is giving me a big wake-up call. I started on my diet yesterday and already lost 5 lbs. Take this diabetes stuff seriously. The surprising thing about me is that there is no family history of diabetes. Watch what you eat. Take control of your health!!

Cindi, you asks if once diabetic . . . always diabetic? The answer is yes and no. The Amer Diabetic Assoc and other medical organizations have desginated a number - either a fasting glucose level of an oral glucose tolerance test value that makes you and "officially" diabetic. The value from the ADA for officially being diabetic is a fasting glucose value of 100mg/dl. Are you diabetic if your value is 99? Don't get caught up on the value. Work on the fundamentals of the problem. If you improve the fundamentals you can be free of diabetic issues. Concetrate on reducing insulin resistance, increasing your physical activity, and reducing weight if needed. Insulin resistance is a big issue for most diabetics. The Mayo Clinic (www.mayo.com) (I think) has a good video that explains insulin resistance well. Increased physical activity also decreases insulin resistance. Increasing fiber in your diet can also help you. If you need more information about insulin resistance and ways to help reduce blood sugar levels, check out www.healthydiabetic.com

Does anyone feel their balance is off since they were diagnosed with diabetes?

I think that some doctors are not upto date on diagnosising diabetes. I had the start of nueropthy five years before I was diagnosisd. I had to go to emergency to finally find out way I had so many symptoms which my doctor at that time seemed to ignore. This was even with the fact that my grandmother, mother, older brother, and younger sister all had type 2.

A couple things on here deserve an answer! 1 - "I have read where people have lost weight and started taking control of their health and no longer have diabetes, can that be true."..... This can be true, but is not common or easy. People with Type 2 Diabetes have the best chance to reverse their condition with diet, exercise and blood glucose management. People with Type 1 have less options, but researchers are working on potential cures such as stem cell injections to the pancreas so that your pancreas can rebuild itself. These options are in different stages of testing, and are not widely available. People with Pre-Diabetes or Gestational Diabetes can definitely help improve the way their body uses insulin (and prevent further complications from Diabetes) by losing weight through diet and exercise. 2 - Doctors are not diagnosing Diabetes to make money, it's a real condition that is affecting 20 million Americans and growing. And yes, Doctors don't diagnose it enough, or give enough information to pre-diabetics. The tests to diagnose Diabetes, and help manage it ARE VERY IMPORTANT, they are not a scheme to make money. I understand that some doctors are very wealthy. But, that has nothing to do with their Diabetic patients, and everything to do with HMOs and big pharma-companies. In fact, if people are not diagnosed properly, with blood testing, etc. then they will end up paying a lot more money later in life for hospitalization fees, or even worse, they could pay with their lives. This is a life-taking, life altering disease if you don't manage it. 3. There are some products that help people with Diabetes which are far superior to others. But, those of us who work with reputable companies (ah-hem) do not use public blogs to try to sell our product. Eating healthy is very important, and you should look for ways to manage blood sugar for extended periods of time. 4. A loss of balance could be caused by Diabetic Neuropathy, or the destruction of nerves due to high blood sugar. Neuropathy is that same condition that causes severe damage to the feet of diabetics, and that's why it's important to check your feet for sores or cuts that you might not be able to feel. Anyone with Diabetes can learn how to manage it. You must take control over the disease before it takes control over you. Remember, the big three are Diet, Exercise, and Insulin and Stay Positive, there are plenty of us working against Diabetes together.

This is a very good information to people with less medical background, just to prevent worse things to happen with full blown diabetic. I currently have a friend in this full blown stage, with kidney failure, eye nerve disorders, and gangrene which endsup in an amputation of the right leg, a very sad condition, but less can be done at this stage of diabetic. So I appreciate such early warning and measures to take very much, thank you
