My 19 year old son, when he was 1 1/2 developed a cough. My wife took him to his regular pediatrician. The doctor gave a prescription for an antibiotic for him to take until finished. We did that, the cough went away and a day or so after the medicine was finished, the cough came back. She took him back to the doctor and got a different antibiotic for him to take until it was gone..... Well, the same thing happened again. On the third visit to the prescriber, I mean doctor, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. This was after following the pediatrician's advice to the letter, spanning a few weeks! I knew then why it was called a "practice"! To make a long story short, a coworker recommended a homeopath. We took our son. Answered a whole lot of wierd questions for 1 1/2 hours and were gtiven a sulfur remedy (sugar balls with highly diluted sulfur) and told to put several under his tongue to dissolve. GUESS WHAT???? AFTER A SINGLE DOSE THE COUGH WAS GONE AND DID NOT RETURN AND THE OTHER PNEUMONIA SYMPOTOMS WERE GONE AS WELL. OUR SON WAS CURED OF THE ILLNESS, WITHOUT THE TYPICAL EXPERIMENTATION WITH DANGEROUS AND OVERPRESCRIBED ANTIBIOTICS. HOMEOPATHY IS CHEAP, EFFECTIVE AND SAFER THAN SUCH "EXPERIMENTAL" MEDICINE. IN MOST CASES, WE CONBSULT WITH OUR HOMEOPATH OVER THE PHONE, SO OUR KIDS DON'T HAVE TO BE EXPOSED .......There are alternatives that work...better!

Great article. One of my daughters just recovered from pneumonia and the doctor was very thorough. But the cough is still going through the house. I will keep these things in mind. Thank you!

Pills are not magic bullets, many have side effects that can be caused by many reasons and conditions. Staying in touch with your trusted doctor is the best assurance you have when it come to your health. Although many are able to go to see their doctor, they are on the mend before they get there, but some concerns can be life or death.

people need to understand that young children can not always explain what is wrong with them or sometimes even how to describe how they feel so its up to the parents to do the right thing and ask the questions that need to be ask

Great example and advice. I have a 6yr old and he has been well for most of his 6 yrs. I can easily forget that he too can become seriously ill. Thanks for the tweak!

Hope you have malpratice insurance you might need it. If the first round antibiotics didn't work why waste time with a second round, why not just send him to the hospital? If you knew it was pneumonia, why not make sure you schedule a follow up in a few days just to make sure the treatment is working(instead of saying if it gets worse call us)? Why not say if it gets worse go to the hospital? They had to operate this child because you wasted time. This could have been prevented. And correct me if I'm wrong, but the illness was spotted, it's your malpratice that let it get severe. Seems that all the alarms were there all along, YOU just didn't have the common sence to take action before things got really bad. If I were the mom I would fire you as my child's doctor and file a lawsuit. I hope you re-think the way you pratice medicine before you lose a patient(if you haven't already).

Something similar happened to my daughter a few weeks ago. I took her to a doctor that had replaced our physican. She checked her out and she tested positive for strep throat. Gave her antibiotics and told me she could return to school the next day. Well the next day she was still running a fever so she could not return. Well the rest of the week passed and the weekend and she is still running a high fever (103). Monday morning I return to the doctor and she sends me to have some chest x-rays for pnumonia and a flu test. Both come back negative. Needless to say I had this done on my lil' girl at 8:30am. Called twice to see if they had the results yet and nothing. So about 3:30 I call again and this doctor gets on the phone and tells me that my child is not the only patient she has. I am a grown woman and I think that I know that. I was just very worried b/c she was still running that high fever and it had been a week. So I ask her to prescribe her a stronger antibiotic and she says that if I didn't like the way she was treating my daughter that I needed to take her elsewhere. This doctor was very rude when saying this. It was really uncalled for b/c I was just a very worried mother. The next morning I did take her to another doctor and what would you guess she still tested positive for strep throat and had a terrible ear infection. The doc said that from the look of her ear and throat that she would never known she had been on antibiotics for a week. The next evening my daughter's fever had finally broke without coming back from being put on a stronger antibiotic and she was able to return back to school.

this is so true you think that why the md puts on meds that they will cure the illnes but lots of times it is the wrong antib. this can only be dead on the head cure if cultures are done so if person (child or adult) isnt better in 3-5 days need to call or go again to have them ck.

My daughter has been sick for two weeks now. She is also on her second for of antibiotics. She seems to be improving and her temp is staying at a steady 99. But she keeps complaining of a belly ache and her legs hurt so bad that in the morning she won't walk on them. I am a little concerned.

I 'm an RN and this makes total sense. If things don't get better on antibiotics, especially at the end of the doses ALWAYS follow-up with a doctor.
