well I have just been diagnosised with DCIS and will have a bilaterial mx-- the reason that you sight of having reconstruction paid for is insane to me- I will not have reconstruction as the goal is to be cancer free- boobs are just that boobs- when you are much younger I can understand the reconstruction desire however- lumpectomey with rads renders one with lumpy worrisome breast one "treated" side and the terriable scare of having to go through this again on the healthy side. For one thing - I have been told "Breast CA is NOT and emergency, you are just a woman who can't take the wait" easy to say when you are not with one with CA- praying that it had not migrated to your nodes and further!!- we get mammos, and wait, we get spot compression mammos, and wait, we get needl biopsies, and wait, we get MRI's and wait, we get sent back for MR guided biopsies, and wait- oh yes and let's do this again, again! You first! once is enough for me and by the way - MY breast do NOT define me- so let them go and move on to cancer freedom!

I find the article that you wrote disheartening to the many DCIS women in this country who emotionally cannot accept the challenge of frequent follow-up testing after surgery. No one can ever understand the emotional distress a woman goes through after being diagnosed with DCIS. For even someone to suggest that a woman has bilateral mastectomies for perkier boobs and enhancement is ludacris. May you never ever have to face the emotional choice of so many women here had to.

I read the article and it fits me except that I am older with stage 0(DCIS) in one breast and a benign tumor in the other. I am strongly considering a bilateral mastectomy because I do not want to go through the anxiety of maybe having the other one removed in the future. It is not an easy decision. I welcome feedback and what other women have done,

Going through 3 re-excisions, 6 weeks of radiation only to be told that I still have two sites, one confirmed atypia the other DCIS. I decided to take them both off. I have had it.
