First off, I think it is ridiculous for someone to pierce their nipples themselves. You are asking for a complication to occur if you get pierced in an environment that is not sterile. I have a good deal of piercings and so does my girlfriend. It is important to go to a shop that is clean and knows the type of jewelry they are going to put in you. One of our friends had her nipples done at a less than reputable shop and had problems getting the piercings to heal. My girlfriend had hers pierced by Tommy T at Tommy T's Body Piercing in Huntington Beach California and her nipples healed fine. Tommy went over the difference in all the jewelry that is out there for piercing. He has been piercing for 16 years and says that you should only be pierced with medical implant grade jewelry because it is certified to be in your body by the American Society for Testing Materials. He said that since there is no government regulated standards saying that Body Piercers need to pierce people with implant grade jewelry, plenty of places pierce with lower grade stainless jewelry because it is less expensive to buy. I can't believe there is no regulations for the jewelry! Why get pierced if the jewelry you have put in you causes you to get infected? I say find a quality shop in your area if you are interested in getting pierced. Do your homework. You can check out the Association of Professional Piercers website at http://www.safepiercing.org for the types of things to ask and look for. Good luck and enjoy your nipples :)

You are correct, there are no studies on nipple piercings causing cancer, but perhaps there should be? My brother died from breast cancer in July. (yes, men can and do get it) The location of the lump was the nipple, and he did have piercings.
