Dyeing to Be Blonde

Ever wonder how a hair color can affect your personality? Meet Michele.

Michele's Story

"I didn't have any fun before I was a blonde."

When I was a brunette I felt like a wall flower, like I wasn't being seen. I had small children at the time, and I felt like a happy house wife. I got my house with the picket fence, 2.3 children. Then in my 30s, I just felt like I needed something to change.

"I grew up when the most beautiful people, excluding myself, were blondes."

When I was growing up, blondes were the hot models - Christine Brinkley, Twiggy, Cheryl Tiegs. Everyone was blonde with straight hair. It was the healthy California look that the beach boys were singing about. I was flat-chested and had curly, frizzy, brunette hair, and it wasn't in vogue. That is why I wanted to be a blonde.

"My mindset completely shifted."

I felt a lot more comfortable in my skin when I became blonde. It was more of a gradual transition because I went from a red brunette, to a red head, then to a blonde. It was almost like someone seeing for the first time, just something different, like they are opening their eyes to someone new, different. Sometimes people want new beginnings, whatever age you are. If you are getting closer to where I am, the big number, you don't really give a damn. You just want to have fun.

"The blonde empowered me to be me."

I got a lot more attention. I am a little wilder in my personality with it and if I want to be the center of attention, the blonde helps. A lot of people assume that being a blonde makes you ditzy, but just put me neck to neck with any man in a business negotiation and I can tear them apart. I think that women feel more empowered when they look good or look the best that they can. If you feel good about yourself you are going to present that.

"You work with what you can work with."

Not everybody can be a blonde. Not everybody can be an actor, not everybody can be an accountant or social worker. There are beautiful women in the world with every hair color, so it is not about being blonde necessarily. It is about being who you are, how comfortable you are in your own skin. It is not about looking at a model that I am never going to be and going, "Oh, I wish I could look like Christie Brinkley," and just go get a lot of surgery and hair transplants. That is just not happening for me. But I can be blonde, and that does make me feel better about myself.
