Trisha's Story

"Coats make a great first impression."

When I work with people on building their wardrobes, I've found that people are intimidated by coats. They're afraid that a coat needs to match almost everything in their wardrobe. But the truth is, a coat can take an outfit in a whole new direction. Here's my guide to three coats that every woman should have in her wardrobe.

1. The Long Coat

The long coat is what I consider a woman's cold weather coat. Depending on where you live in the country, it can be full-length or three-quarter-length - whatever it takes to stay warm in the winter. Great things to look for in a long coat are special detailing, like epaulettes, which make the coat stand out just a bit.

2. The Structured Coat

The structured coat is an important part of the foundation wardrobe. It can be a blazer-style jacket or something a little bit different, like a motorcycle-style jacket. The key is to find a structured coat with great lines that create a shape. For example, because I have short legs and a long waist, a cropped motorcycle jacket helps balance out that proportion.

A structured coat can work in different scenarios. On the weekend you can pair it with jeans and a T-shirt, but it also works at the office, with a pencil skirt and blouse. The structured shape makes this possible.

3. The Unstructured Coat

With an unstructured coat, you can get a bit creative. For example, you can get a coat with an oversized collar, and this will frame your face and neck nicely. You can also look for details, like big buttons or pockets. The unstructured coat in my wardrobe has a 1960s feel. I love it.

"When you're looking for coats for your foundation wardrobe, be adventurous - especially with color."

With your coats, you want to express your personality. It's the first thing people see when they talk to you. If you're drawn to a bright color, go for it, but remember my rule of thumb: make sure the coat works with at least three other items in your wardrobe.
