Bronchospasm (also called bronchoconstriction or bronchial spasm) is a tightening of the smooth muscle that lines the airways (bronchi or bronchioles) in the lung. This tightening can contribute to a worsening of asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing.

Bronchospasms can usually be relieved with medications called bronchodilators.
