Intal cromolyn sodium
Tilade nedocromil sodium

How It Works

Normally, the body reacts to allergies or infections by releasing substances that cause inflammation. By preventing the release of these substances, membrane stabilizers help minimize inflammation. This helps keep breathing tubes clear, making it easier to breathe.

Why It Is Used

Membrane stabilizers are used mainly for asthma and other lung diseases, but they may also work for people who have cystic fibrosis. Currently, there is not much research about membrane stabilizers as a treatment for people who have cystic fibrosis.

How Well It Works

More studies are needed about how well membrane stabilizers work compared to other treatments such as corticosteroids.

Side Effects

The side effects of membrane stabilizers are mild, so they may be used in children or others who cannot tolerate corticosteroids.

See Drug Reference for a full list of side effects. (Drug Reference is not available in all systems.)

What To Think About

Both cromolyn (Intal) and nedocromil (Tilade) are expensive.
