An excess amount of iron in the blood that is caused by certain medical conditions can produce symptoms similar to those of hemochromatosis. These medical conditions include:1
- Thalassemia.
- Some types of anemia.
- Transfusion-caused iron overload.
- Chronic iron oversupplementation.
- Hepatitis.
- Alcoholic liver disease.
- Porphyria cutanea tarda, a metabolic disorder often associated with liver disease.
