Heartburn is an uncomfortable feeling or burning pain behind the breastbone. It may occur after eating, soon after lying down, or when bending forward. Heartburn may also occur after taking certain medications.
Heartburn is a common symptom during pregnancy. About 25% of pregnant women have heartburn every day, and 50% of pregnant women have heartburn at least once a month. As the uterus expands during pregnancy, it puts increasing upward pressure on the stomach.
If you have symptoms of heartburn, it is okay to use Tums. Be sure to talk with your health professional before taking any other heartburn medications. Some medications may not be safe to take during pregnancy.
If your heartburn is interfering with your ability to eat, drink, or participate in your usual activities, your health professional can advise you on how to control your heartburn.
