Some other conditions that can cause symptoms similar to thyroid nodules include:

  • Thyroid inflammation (thyroiditis).
  • An overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism, most commonly Graves' disease).
  • Overdevelopment of one side (lobe) of the thyroid gland.
  • Scar tissue following neck surgery.
  • Regrowth of thyroid tissue after a person has thyroid surgery or radioactive iodine has been used to treat thyroid disease.
