Tips for reducing fever from chickenpox

Provided by: Healthwise

If your child is uncomfortable because of a fever from chickenpox, you can have the child:

  • Drink more water and juices. Children may enjoy sucking on ice chips or Popsicles.
  • Take lukewarm sponge baths.
  • Dress lightly and avoid wrapping up in warm blankets.
  • Take medication to reduce fever as needed. Acetaminophen (Tylenol, Liquiprin, Tempra) or ibuprofen (Advil) can be safely used to reduce fever from chickenpox. However, it may prolong the illness by 1 or 2 days. Do not give aspirin to anyone younger than 20 because of the risk of Reye's syndrome.
