Other conditions with symptoms similar to pinworm infection include:
- Inflammation and swelling of the veins surrounding the lowest part of the intestines and the anus (hemorrhoids).
- Infections caused by other intestinal parasites (Ascaris, Trichuris, or tapeworms).
- Urinary tract infection (causing painful urination).
- Vaginal infection (causing vaginal itching and discharge).
- Irritation of the skin around the anus caused by contact with chemicals (contact dermatitis) or by long-term itching of the skin around the anus.
- Infection of the skin around the anus caused by a fungus or by bacteria (strep).
Other less common conditions with similar symptoms include skin conditions such as psoriasis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), or scabies.
