Atopic dermatitis is a long-lasting (chronic) skin condition that causes intense itching and then a red, raised rash. In severe cases, the rash develops clear fluid-filled blisters. In infants, it usually affects the cheeks, the front of the knees, and the back of the elbows.
Atopic dermatitis is often called eczema or atopic eczema.
